We often make great efforts to keep our bodies in shape through exercise and diet. Yet what truly matters is keeping the brain fit in order to protect our future. But what does it really mean to keep the brain fit?

The most essential part of maintaining a fit brain is learning to stay away from neurotoxins in everyday life. Neurotoxins are substances that poison the nervous system.

Naturally, these include chemicals such as lead and copper. In addition, certain toxins carried by sea creatures, air pollution, and harmful substances in drinking water can also have neurotoxic effects.

Beyond these, neurotoxins may come from drug and alcohol use, as well as from products like nail polish, hair dyes, room sprays, artificial air fresheners, and even laundry and dish detergents — all of which may contain harmful chemicals we inhale without realizing it. Many materials used in construction, and even some medications such as antidepressants or chemotherapy drugs, can also exhibit neurotoxic properties.

If we pay attention to these substances and minimize our exposure as much as possible, we can help keep our brains fit. Doing so may also make us more fortunate in avoiding modern diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.
